Sorry all for silence. I’d like to say it’s been because I’ve been fiercly productive but… well, been working overtime at work, getting home worn out, stubbornly not writing, then enjoying WAY too much of the new World of Warcraft expansion. Well, and I’ve been holding off on this 1st of the month post because chapter wasn’t quite ready and the monthly image is a bit spoilery for the chapter. Only a bit, but… enough that I’ve been holding off. That said, I’m giving myself a hard date the chapter is going up… Monday the 5th. I’m close enough that should not be an issue but will still push me to not just sit on my angelcake and play WoW all day… even though, seriously, I am loving the flavor of Legion!
To help tide you all over until the new chapter though, as it is the 1st of the month, that means I have posted the monthly Taralynn Q&A ! There were some fun questions, including someone finally asking me what was up with my Up Arrow logo. Fun times! But, as we hit one of our goals: A monthly Pin-up image as voted by our $5 and up patrons. September’s theme was Back-to-School and the winner of our poll was Robynne in a Japanese schoolgirl uniform. I tapped Rezuban to draw it for us because he did such a good job with our last image. So, behold, Robynne in all her detentioned glory!
First of all, the font for Robynne’s handwriting was perfect. I mean, Robynne looks great too, but that font looks exactly like how I imagine Robynne’s handwriting to look. Second, please remember, these are pin-up images, thus, not cannon thus don’t worry so much about the fact Robynne wouldn’t be caught dead in that outfit. Just roll with it! XD But seriously, Rezuban did a great job on this and if you wanted to swing by his deviatart page and let him know, that’d be awesome of you.
So yeah, Monday, new chapter. Sorry I’ve been silent. I know some of you expressed wishes they could follow me on something of a social media but… I really don’t do that. I mean, I tried out doing Twitter but it just didn’t work for me. I just never think to post things on it. I post more here on the front page of this website than I ever have on Facebook… and that’s with my mother and siblings badgering me that I should do stuff on Facebook. Sadly, this is the peak of my online social presence. I think my silence wouldn’t be so much cause for concern if I hadn’t gone on a hiatus that spanned at least one full presidential term. I’m sorry for that and will refocus myself on getting you all more frequent updates. I just know that I WILL fail again at some point to do so and, for that, I’m sorry. That’s still not an excuse to not try!
In other news, is there anyone who has ever used a mechanical keyboard? I’m considering buying one and would like some reviews. Also, I just bought a mini-elliptical for my desk so I can write and excersize at the same time! Isn’t that awesome? I’m also looking for a new anime to start and a friend told me I’d like Fairy Tale. Anyone here seen that? How is it? What animes would you compare it to as far as “If you like X you’ll probably like Y”?
Lastly, this is more directed at Zexand who has asked twice now but I’ve shied away from answering his question. The way my Patreon goals work is I want them to reach monthly donation levels before I do that incentive. The whole idea of why is I use the monthly donations to supplement my salary at my day job. While one time donations are AWESOME they don’t do the same thing for my budget that a steady monthly stream does. So, long story short, if the next level of incentives is something you really want to see and you wanted to do a one-time donation to get that started, send me an email and we can talk and see what you’re thinking. However, just know that I’d need to replace that donation level’s incentive and would need ideas. 🙂
See you all on Monday,
Taralynn
Fairy tail is a pretty cool anime. I’d compare it to something else but that wouldn’t do it justice. My personal rule is if I’m interested in a show I give it 3 episodes.
Anime Recommendations ? Well, they aren’t full series but the 2 Little Witch Acadamia films (that were on netflix last I checked) are both very well done. I recall Fairy Tail being alright – it’s a Shounen Jump show so – if you’ve enjoyed One Piece, Naruto or Bleach , it’s pretty similar stuff. I guess it’s a little closer to Yugioh and pokemon than the other 3 are. Kill la kill is pretty cool if you haven’t seen it yet (couple years old now). If you want some gender bending/queer type stuff – Yamada Kun and the 7 witches was a pretty good comic , I only caught 2 episodes of the anime though. There’s even some cool american stuff out there too if you want to watch something in english – Adventure Time, Steven Universe , the new Voltron(netflix), Avatar (the last airbender) and it’s Sequel Korra. Lot’s of stuff out there to watch !
The closest ones to fairy tail in terms of theme (fighting with your comrades in a guild type of deal. Set in a world with mythical creatures and people going on adventures while occasionally fighting strong opponents.) would be One piece (which I refuse to watch. Because I really don’t like the art style. The other is Hunter x Hunter.
You might ask what do I know of one piece since I refuse to watch it. Well I know alot because my friends won’t stop talking about it.
Now onto the must watch list.
No game no life. Don’t ask questions, just watch it. Then be disappointed that there isn’t any more. Then try and find out where you can get the light novels to fill the gap in your life.
Since you’re into WoW you’ll really like log horizon.
For something a little newer. One punch man. Again. No questions.
Naruto I’d recommend purely because it’s fun. The manga though. The anime has way too much fillers.
If you’d like one right in the feels check out angel beats.
I can’t forget Samurai Champloo.
And lastly Assassination classroom. (I said no questions! )
These are just off the top of my head.
There’s a website that let’s you enter all the shows that you’ve watched and their ratings then spits out recommendations based on that. I forgot the address but it’s first-ish on Google when searching for anime recommendations.
Right. Longest mobile comment ever. Deploy!
A bunch of my friends have mechanical keyboards and they swear by them. Can’t say I’ve really tried them out in games or anything, but they do feel pretty nice.
I’ll also second the One Punch Man recommendation if you haven’t seen it. It’s great.
hey taralynn glad to hear your OK.
I wouldn’t worry to much about social media i am terrible at it as well. you just need to think of it the outer way around it’s not that you are bad with social media, you are just really good at stopping cyber starkers.
as for mechanical keyboard i may be showing my age a bit but when i started using computers that is all their was. and i mean the ones you had to screw in to your pc. i still use a mechanical keyboard stile today i have tried others and they are fine i just have a preference for mechanical keyboard. that said its more important you get one in a size comfortable for your hands a right sized bored can do wonders.
Fairy Tale is an excellent anime that every anime buff i know irl loves. it has a grate story with memorable characters. i dont know of any outer anime i can really compare it to but its from the same guy who made rave master so it you have seen that it can give you a good idea of the stile of the anime.
last sorry to everyone who has bean waiting for updates to the wiki. i have had a lot on my plate recently. from redecorating a section of the house setting up my pc in an new office, then half my d&d group quit on me but new people wanted to join so i had to do some major rework of the plan’ed story, and lastly getting distracted do experiments with a new’ish type of cooking called sous vide. i will try to get back to regular updates soon, i promise
Mechanical > all other keyboards. The end.
As for an anime… I don’t know if you’ve been keeping up on this already or not, but Re:Zero has been AMAZING. Highly recommend!
For something older you may not have heard of that was really incredible, look up Book of Bantorra.
I’ll second above people in saying Fairy Tail is your basic battle anime, so if you’re into that kind of thing, you’ll like it. The story is simple, though not necessarily shallow, and the character’s are somewhat stereotypical to make them easy to keep consistent. One Punch Man is amazing, it mocks every stereotype from typicao battle anime and manga, and so far Re:Zero has been great. Someone else also mentioned Yamada-kun and the Seven Witches, which is my favourite manga, and the anime is good too, and I would recommend it for you. Some aspects remind me a fair bit of MGP, for example, the high school student council is super overpowered, and adults rarely make appearances since the author made a point to focus the story on the kids. It’s really good.
As for keyboards, mechanical is nice. But it’s all up to personal preference in the end. I’d try to find a store near you with keyboard demos. A fair number of computer parts stores and computer accessory stores have these, and some of your more generic supermarkets with electronic sections might have them as well. Try some different keyboards and see if mechanical is your thing, or if there’s a different kind of keyboard or switch that appeals to you. Personally, I like blue cherry switches, because they make the most satisfying clicking sounds. But make sure you like the sensitivity and weight, too. Those tend to be switch specific, so if you like a certain keyboard, you’ll probably like a different keyboard with the same switch. So go try some things
Oh, you say Rob wouldn’t be caught dead in that outfit, but she also wouldn’t be caught dead in a cheerleader outfit. Soooooo…ya never know? 😉
AVOID the Logitech G710+ mechanical keyboard. Within weeks of getting my very expensive mechanical keyboard, I had to open it up and solder a loose connection because one of my keys stopped working, several times. The last time I went and just added some solder to any of the connections that looked like they might break loose… and now I still have one of the LED backlights that goes off and on randomly.
I’m aware that I might have just got that ONE keyboard that was made when the machine was running out of solder, or whatever, but I’ve heard of others having similar issues with keys or LEDs not functioning. If, like me, you have the skill and equipment to solder the loose connections back on the keyboard, it’s a good keyboard with good support… when it’s working. But in order to get it working right, you have to do some of the work that should have been done by the manufacturers. AVOID if you cannot.
I’ll echo pretty much everything Reaper said, botherwise wit anime and keyboards. All I’ve ever had are mechanical keyboards, including my current one which is a Razer backlit keyboard, which I really enjoy. I’ve tried nonmechanical keyboards before that friends have had, but didn’t really care for them… I like the feedback and surety of mechanical keys. Razer can be a bit more expensive, but their computer peripherals are usually above-average or better in quality. And depending on your lighting conditions, I think a backlit keyboard is really worth it (it was a great purchase for me). If you have something like a Micro Center in your area, I recommend seeing if they have a setup you can try. In the end, I think it really comes down to personal preference.
As for anime, I think I can back up most of the references given so far. I love Fairy Tail, and if you enjoyed either One Piece, Bleach, or Naruto (or most fantasy Shonen series) then you’ll really enjoy Fairy Tail. It has a nice, long run that’s still not hard to watch, so it’s a decent time investment. One Punch Man is a must-watch series. As is Yamada and the 7 Witches. Other fun series are The Devil Is A Part-Timer, Accel World, Is It Wrong To Try To Pick Up Girls In A Dungeon?, and The Irregular at Magic High School. Those are some good series I don’t see recommended a lot, mostly because a lot of people I know simply have never heard of them. There are more series I’ve seen over the years, but it’s hard to recommend something without knowing what you do and don’t like.
And sorry about the Patreus questions. I only asked twice because I wasn’t sure it was seen the first time. I was planning to donate monthly regardless, I just wanted to know how things worked. I have a good job and could also do a larger one-time donation to show support, and because I’d like to see the next goal reached, but I didn’t mean to make things uncomfortable. I didn’t (don’t?) know how to ask privately. Once again, my apologies.
I’ll second the recommendations for Fairy Tail- decent plot, memorable characters, very creative, and the “fanservice” is more of an equal opportunity thing than most similar shows, and therefore a hell of a lot more tolerable. One Punch Man is… well, I don’t think it’s as “must watch” as a lot of the people above, it’s sort of a one note joke the whole way through, but it has some incredible fight scenes and is a decent attempt at lampooning the superhero genre. Worth a watch if you’ve got the time. Kill La Kill is hella great- much less fanservicey than I was initially led to believe, genuinely funny and awesome at the same time, and is now one of my favorite animes. Definitely recommend that one.
As for less comparable animes, as mentioned Yamada and the Seven Witches is a fun gender bender one, though I admit I’ve only read the manga, and the gender bending eventually becomes just one thread in a larger plot, so it’s most “fun” at the beginning. Log Horizon is probably the best take on the “stuck in a video game” genre that I’ve seen, much more interesting problems and conflicts in it than in most similar shows (ie. SAO, No Game No Life, which I see was recommended by someone else here but which I will actually DErecommend, the main character is utter scum and one of his very first actions in the show is to try to mentally enslave a girl who came asking for his help; nice world but the horrifying MC is way too much of a put off). not sure what else to recommend, afraid I haven’t watched much anime recently. RE:Zero is an okay show… again, if you’re not put off by the main character, who I flip between liking and hating every episode as he seemingly INTENTIONALLY makes himself outright annoying. Might be your thing, might not be.
