Okay, we made it to 2 in April…

Chapter 34, done! Now I just have 5 days to get 35 done to meet my goal. Thursday is my big day to write so if I could get all the mental positive energy heading my way that you have on Thursday, I’d appreciate it.

I’ve been really impressed by the responses people have been giving me for these prompts. I have to say you all have a lot of creativity! What I loved most from this one was all the various names people came up with for off-brand Mountain Dew! Some of those were just perfect! Okay, next prompt:

The author snaps her fingers and the MGP-verse suddenly becomes a traditional super-hero universe. What are the various characters powers/role. Rules: No elemental powers as the girls have those in the MGP-verse. Also, they don’t HAVE to have powers. If you feel someone would work better as a spunky newswoman than a super heroine, go for it!

One more thing. Just finished watching Gravity Falls. Wow… that show was GREAT! If you haven’t seen it, you should. It’s only two seasons and it’s got SO MUCH depth for a kids show. Honey, it’s got so much depth for any show! I can’t speak highly enough of it. Also… Gravity Falls HAS interfered with chapter progress so… probably for the best that I finished it XD

See you next summer,
Taralynn

  1. Well, if the chapters are late for Gravity Falls, I totally understand. Its one of the best shows I’ve ever seen, and I really liked the ending. Thanks for the chapter 🙂

  2. Woo! This chapter was great, and as for Chapter 35 in April… I believe in you, Taralynn! Ganbatte!

Gravity Falls, huh? Never heard of it before now, but it certainly sounds like it may be worth giving a try.

As for the prompt, hmm, let’s see….

I’m really, really torn on the flight/super strength set of powers. On one hand, Angela seems to me like the perfect analog to Supergirl… I never read the comics myself (though I did see her in the Blackest Night/Brightest Day comics), but I’ve rather enjoyed the CBS show. I’d definitely recommend it. However, on the other hand I could easily see Mal being an analog to Rogue (not the power-sapping ability, just the strength/flight powers), as I can see her wanting to smash things and being really good at it. I know she has the giant sword in MGP, but I still think MAL SMASH.

Hmm, actually, I think I want to change my answer. I know I could just edit what I wrote above, but I’ll keep it so it shows my thought process. Leave Angela as Supergirl; it’s way too good of a fit for their personalities. (Though if you’d prefer to go Marvel over DC, Angela would be a Captain America equivalent… but I still feel better about Supergirl.) Instead, make Mal more like Thor… hear me out! I know you said no elemental powers, but the fact that Thor and Valor both have lightning powers didn’t occur to me until after I already saw them as a good fit. I know there’s a female Thor now, but I’m not basing it on that, either. First, much like the battle-eager Thor, Mal loves a good scrap… and I can imagine her celebrating her victories at party. Plus, she’d get a weapon in Mjolnir, one she can smash things with, haha.

Noriko is the Batman/Batgirl equivalent. She’s already dark, brooding, has investigative skills, and has crazy martial arts and ninjitsu skills that she uses to support a super-powered team.

Vivian and Kara should both be Lanterns, as it seems to me that even as far as the rest of the Spirit Guard go, they’re more in tune with the emotional aspects of their powers. Vivian has a lot of willpower, and even dubs herself the “Breaker of Wills,” so she would be a Green Lantern (those who wield the power of Will). Kara, on the other hand, would be either a Blue Lantern (who wield Hope) or Indigo Lantern (Compassion)… because even though it sounds like Compassion is a better fit, I feel she would be more in agreement with the values of the Blue Lantern Corps over that of the Indigo Tribe. Okay, I know these roles are very specific to DC, since I’m not aware of a very similar power system in other comics (Marvel, Dark Horse, or others)… but I feel they fit too well to not be used. (Though color and emotion-based magic is used to great effect in Brent Weeks’s Lightbringer series…*so good.*)

Kind of like for Angela, I have two possibilities for Robynne. My first thought is her being a Tony Stark / Iron Man equivalent. She’s a mechanical engineering major, very analytical and scientific, rejects the concept of magic as purely mystical, isn’t as socially well-adjusted, and overall fits that non-leader support role. That, however, is actually my secondary choice. My preference is to see a bit of a 180 and have her be a mage, sort of like Dr Fate or Zatanna in the DC universe. I think it fits her very well, arguably even better than being a Tony Stark / Iron Man equivalent. The reason is that despite the mysticism of magic in DC, those characters study it in a very academic way and treat it as a logical force of the supernatural world that follows specific rules, even if they aren’t always well known. As Robynne tries to understand and analyze empathokinesis and auras, it makes me see her as being a good fit for those spellcasters. Plus, as Noriko mentioned when she was performing Waveform’s conversion, Robynne likes to win in ways that make her feel clever or sneaky. I think that applies to a lot of magical-based characters in things like the Justice League or the Avengers.

Cory would be the equivalent of Booster Gold. Largely a comic relief hero, he traveled from the future to the age of superheroes to try and be renowned as a hero himself. He doesn’t have any powers, but uses super-advanced futuristic technology to make him capable of fighting on the same level as many superheroes. Did it for the fame and fortune, but over time becomes less self-absorbed and more genuinely heroic. Still the comic relief. Alternatively, Cory could also be a less-perverted Deadpool equivalent. Because, let’s face it, Cory would break the fourth wall whenever he wanted for dramatic effect. Heck, if you didn’t want Vivian to be a Lantern, she could be the Deadpool equivalent, haha.

Stacy is totally the spunky reporter. She defines both spunky and personable.

Eli, hmm. He’s a great foil for Cory, but it’s hard to extrapolate a defining characteristic for him to correlate… kinda like his aura, it’s a little bland like tofu. If we stick with Kara-as-a-Lantern theme, then Eli would be her equivalent of Carol Ferris. Otherwise I could see him being an “Alfred” or “Commissioner Gordon” equivalent for Kara.

Cammy is the Lex Luthor equivalent. Hell, the only thing keeping her from being him right now is that she’s still in College. But in a superhero universe, maybe her father had an “accident” and she took over his company young.

One other recommendation I could make would be for Kunapipi… she’d have to be a little less well-adjusted to humanity than she is now, but I’d love to see her be in a role like Castiel from Supernatural. Hilarity could ensue.

  3. Okays it’s Thursday and I am sending you all the positive energy I can spare 🙂

  4. Ooh, super power generation, eh?

Rob – Probably something stealth based. A perception filter? When barely on, blends in with a crowd and when full blast complete invisibility. Of course, where’s the fun in that? It would be more ironic if she got stronger and faster the more attention was on her.

Mal – Point blank concussive blasts. Effectively super strength, but a bit more interesting, I think. Plus, no extra durability, so tension can still be high.

Angela – Hmmm…she’s tough. Straight up, I can see her having a classical set. Flight, super strength, etc… But…it would also be interesting if she had a power that went against what she was. Something darker? I dunno, drawing a blank.

Vivian – Emotion reading and manipulation. She shows up, and shes your best friend…or your worst nightmare…or horribly depressing to be around. Either that or a perception boost to make her super analytical. Picking things out about people and whittling away at them with it.

Kara – Hard not to see her with some kind of healing. But straight up healing is so boring. Maybe she could have five ‘slots’ where she could take an injury away from someone, store it, and inflict it on someone else? It could leaver her with a moral dilemma. Can’t heal unless she hurts someone, etc… It would be interesting, but feels a bit too cruel to inflict on her.

Noriko wouldn’t have any powers. She would just be an awesome normal person. Well trained, able to go toe to toe with people with powers. People would speculate that she had them, but…

Stacy, Eli, and Cory would be normals. At first, anyway. One of them could gain powers eventually (Cory, maybe. Make Eli jealous that even his goofy friend got the powers and gets to fight baddies while he’s still stuck on the sidelines.)

Cammy would have full blown mind control/brain washing. Nothing as subtle as we see here. A whole army of thralls. To keep it interesting, the main team would probably have to be immune, or have devices that protect them or something.

Eddie and Dale are tough, as we haven’t seen much of them. Something sound based for Dale, and maybe technology based for Eddie? Making gadgets would be useful. Hmmm…

Kuna…would just be a weird mascot? Nah, probably a shapeshifter, able to turn into animals and such.

Platicore would definitely be the bad guy gadget maker. His constructs could be more robotic/synthetic, etc…
